The Tezos foundation launched a small stream dispenser faucet for crypto that will stream XTZ tokens to the users so we are reading more about it in the Tezos news today.
The funds in the faucet are meant for testing and development purposes according to the site and there are some limits. However, the home page of the faucet invited all of the ‘’normal’’ users to claim funds as well. Unlike some other popular faucets, the Tezos Foundation launched a dispenser for XTZ tokens that are worth real money. The main page of the faucet put it:
“This is real (mainnet) tez and has a market value…Please drink responsibly.”
It is still unclear why Tezos decided to give away money to its users but it is hard to complain when the project pays the users out of its own pocket. There are a few limitations in place to prevent the users from taking more than the fair share so the Tezos faucet pays out 0.01 per request. This will prevent the users from claiming more than once per day based on the IP addresses and wallet addresses as well. Tezos added that they will change these limits at any time or they will discontinue the faucet overall. Despite the restrictions, one request will give enough tokens for a test drive. Some users did exactly that.
The users who did the test drive were able to stake 0.01 XTZ via the Tezbox online wallet and thanks to Tezos’s low transaction fees, they were able to send the funds to an already existing address for free though sending these funds to an empty wallet would have to come with a cost. It’s important to know that most of the official faucets payout testnet tokens have no real value other than they can be used to test a lot of dapps. Third-party faucets payout real crypto but they do have high payout thresholds. None of the approaches is similar to Gavin Andresen’s original faucet that gave bitcoin away without any hidden costs in 2010.
Tezos can easily be generous but if the users find a way to exploit the system, the faucet could die out. Stellar for example, shut down its recent airdrop in December when take accounts tried to claim funds.
