Trump pardons the former Ripple board member Ken Kurson in his last moments of the presidency but other influential people like Silk Road’s Ross Ulbricht and Edward Snowden were not on the pardoning list so let’s read more in today’s Ripple news.
US President Donald Trump pardons former Ripple board member Ken Kurson who also operated as the co-founder of Modern Consensus which is a crypto media outlet. Kurson was one of the 73 people that received a full pardon from Trump less than 12 hours before his presidency is set to end. About 70 individuals had their sentences commuted but the list didn’t include the Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, who was considered for a pardon last month while Julian Assange who is the Wikileaks founder helped popularize the use of BTC, as well as Edward Snowden who released details on the US Surveillance program to Glenn Greenwald who was a reporter at the Guardian.
Other recipients of the pardons include former campaign strategist Steve Bannon who was allegedly working on a cryptocurrency project back in 2018 before he was arrested in 2020 on fraud charges. Rapper Lil Wayne also faced jail time and got pardoned as well as Kodak Black who is serving a 3-year sentence on the weapons charges. Kurson was arrested in October on charges of cyberstalking his former wife and the background checks made raised many accusations of sending threatening messages and installing software for stalking as well. The Wednesday’s pardon notice read:
“In a powerful letter to the prosecutors, Mr. Kurson’s ex-wife wrote on his behalf that she never wanted this investigation or arrest and, ‘repeatedly asked for the FBI to drop it… I hired a lawyer to protect me from being forced into yet another round of questioning. My disgust with this arrest and the subsequent articles is bottomless.”
The pardon notice continued on praising Kurson who is a friend to Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. The lack of Ulbricht’s name on the list will disappoint plenty of people in the industry who have been advocating for a pardon for years. Rep. Thomas Massie, a Congressman since 2012 was a strong supporter of Ulbricht’s pardon alongside people like Snowden. Trump is out of office once President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in today.
