Francis Suarez who has been Miami’s mayor since 2017 wants to make the city the most attractive in the US for people in the crypto and blockchain industry. In an interview with Forbes that was published a few days ago, Suarez said that the lawmakers in Miami are looking into the policies of crypto-friendly areas like New York and Wyoming in an effort to promote regulatory incentives for blockchain and crypto in Florida:
“[Miami is] making sure that we have the most progressive crypto laws. We want to make sure that we believe that if all things are equal, we win.

So, we just want to equalize the playing field. We want to make sure that nobody has an advantage over us based on laws that are easily changeable.”
Mayor Suarez didn’t describe the race as to become the regulatory winner as a fight between lawmakers with the other jurisdictions but gave Wyoming “kudos for being smart” in attracting crypto companies but added that each city in America should try to grow its technology ecosystem.” He continued:
“We’re working on making sure that our incentives are in place and that our legislation promotes crypto and blockchain and is forward-thinking.”
The mayor made a few bullish statements as well regarding Bitcoin and other cryptos in recent weeks including having Miami consider the city employees to get paid in BTC rather than the US dollar. He proposed to allow residents in Miami to pay for local fees and taxes using crypto as well as investing some of the treasuries of the city in BTC which is the hardest task according to him. He spoke about it with some high profile figures in the crypto space like Gemini’s co-founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss when Tyler said that the mayor is “leading the way for governments and Bitcoin.”
Mayor Suarez didn’t provide a timeline when these actions could be taken into effect but some in the community started taking notice.
