The latest Monero news have been showing a lot of updates, one of which is a Monero documentary titled “Monero Means Money” which hit the US box office top for a moment, becoming the highest grossing film. This was actually a documentary about the privacy coin Monero with the idea to raise money in its opening weekend.
The money it raised was a couple of thousand dollars (around $3,430) making it the highest grossing US film of that weekend for a very brief period, knowing that most cinemas are closed now. However, as the case often is with crypto, there are still some major caveats.
From what we know, the Monero documentary is solid but nowhere near the heights of movie blockbusters such as the latest Avengers (which topped around $350 million). Also, the fact that cinemas are closed maybe only gives a push to this documentary and makes it more popular among the masses.
You can watch the “Monero Means Money” trailer below.
The community behind the privacy coin Monero won on a technicality. As we know, it is currently illegal for many cinemas in the US to stay open amid the shutdown, or for would-be moviegoers to attend any screenings.
Monero’s documentary cost nothing to produce and has since grossed an additional $150. It was premiered at the Laemmle Theaters in Los Angeles to purchased-but-unfilled seats. Now, the movie is again playing at the Tampa Theatre until April 27, and has been screened to empty seats at the Parkway Theater & Film Lounge outside Pittsburgh.
“Monero Means Money” is a 88-minute film which is directed and produced by Justin Ehrenhofer. The Monero documentary is also an unabridged keynote speech given by the cryptocurrency expert Dr. Daniel Kim in December 2019. In it, Kim extols the benefits of the privacy coin.
“A surveillance state in which everybody’s financial transactions are tracked and surveilled and looked at is not an open society that we want to be living in,” he says in the film.
It cost the producers approximately $2,500 to put on the screenings. the profits of $1,000 (at this point) will be used for publicity expenses or given to theaters, as Ehrenhofer told the cryptocurrency news outlets.
Meanwhile, the Monero (XMR) cryptocurrency just turned 6 years old. The price of XMR today is $56.44 with a 2.81% increase this morning.
