The Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht is officially launching a line of NFTs that will chronicle points of his life. The founder of the defunct darknet marketplace announced on Medium that he is auctioning a line of NFTs detailing different points in his life all the way to the time in prison. Minted on Ethereum, the Ross Ulbricht Genesis Collection will launch on Tuesday at the 2021 Art Basel event in Miami and will run from December 2 to December 8 on the SuperRare NFT platform by Entopic. The collection will include ten items from Ulbricht like writings, artwork, and animation by digital artist Levitate. He wrote:
“I was 29 years old when I was arrested. Suddenly, sitting in prison, I had time for drawing again. I reconnected with my artistic side, producing illustrations that told the story I was going through.”
This has been the most meaningful project of our lives

Having been in prison since 2013, Ulbricht didn’t fully participate in the NFT explosion that took over crypto. The Silk Road founder wrote that when someone suggested selling his art as NFTs he had no clue what they were talking about. With the help of others, he learned and started developing them. The FreeRoss.org website that was operated by his mom Lyn said the NFT launch will act as a fundraiser for both Ulbricht’s prison support and freedom efforts:
“There is a lot we can do with the proceeds of this auction, but one idea I am committed to is to help kids travel to visit their moms and dads in prison.”
In 2011, Ulbricht launched Silk Road, a darknet site where anything was available for purchase and sold using BTC. The site started as a place to buy illegal drugs but then expanded to weapons, drugs, and other contraband items. The website was shut down in 2013 when he was arrested. In 2015, Ulbricht was convicted of conspiracy to launder money, narcotics trafficking, computer hacking, and running a criminal enterprise. He got sentenced to two life sentences plus 40 years in prison. He noted:
“Prison shatters families. It shatters communities. And the kids are the ones who suffer.”
