Phishing Attack Pretended To Be MetaMask Crypto Wallet: Report

Phishing attack pretending to be Ethereum’s MetaMask crypto wallet was identified by CipherTrace after they noted an uptick in posts about the malicious version of the wallet so let’s find out more in today’s crypto news.

CipherTrace identified a malicious website posing as MetaMask wallet after the URL of the apparent phishing attack redirected the users to a website looking almost identical to the original. One Twitter user expressed his concerns about the website of the wallet in a tweet. Right after that, Ciphertrace reported that they saw an increase in posts alleging user funds were stolen via a Chrome browser extension phishing attack that pretended to be Ethereum-based wallet MetaMask.

MetaMask is a browser plugin that serves as an ETH wallet and provides the user’s access to unique ETH addresses that are needed to buy and sell Ethereum or other ETH-based tokens. MetaMask’s wallet is online which means it is vulnerable to phishing attacks where the scammers exploited the users’ personal information. The Phishing attack pretended to be the wallet in order to scam users out of their funds as CipherTrace reported:

 “Within the past 24 hours, CipherTrace has noticed an uptick of alerts and comments within the online cryptocurrency community of users’ funds being stolen via a Chrome browser extension phishing attack posing as cryptocurrency wallet and browser extension MetaMask.”

The fraudulent browser extension redirected to a URL that was initially seen eight days ago on November 26, 2020, according to the data from the analytics company. Not long after, users started informing CipherTrace that the wallet is malicious and one Twitter user under the handle “dmazorosete” contacted MetaMask suggesting the website looks like a scam.

Up to this date, the user has not received a response from MetaMask about the tweet but what’s even more interesting, based on the screenshots by Ciphertrace, the phishing attack site looks almost identical to MetaMask itself as it is designed to trick users into believing that it is the real deal.

As reported previously, Google and Apple’s crypto policies have been extremely criticized but no matter, MetaMask launched its Ethereum wallet for all iOS and Android users.  MetaMask has finally released a mobile version of the ETH wallet for mobile users as announced on Twitter. The wallet allows users to make seamless ETH payments to multiple ETH-based dapps which means that the mobile users can connect to different Defi exchanges such as Compound, Uniswap, Synthetix, and Aave. The wallet was initially released as an extension for desktop browsers in 2016.
