Ethereum’s nodes run in centralized cloud services according to Chainstack’s data that was released for the latest cryptocurrency news.
Vitalik Buterin spoke recently to the crypto community speaking at the Blockchain Connect conference and he dismissed the blockchains like EOS, NEO and TRON saying that they have hit ultra-high TPS speeds. He claimed:
‘’When a blockchain project claims ‘We can do 3,500 TPS because we have a different algorithm,’ what we really mean is ‘We are a centralized pile of trash because we only have 7 nodes running the entire thing.’’
However, it seems really awkward that only 38 percent of Ethereum’s nodes are independently hosted. More than 61.6 percent are running on the cloud which makes the nodes centralized. The situation gets even worse. The biggest stakeholder in the Ethereum network is Amazon Web Services which is Bezos’ company which operates more than 25 percent of all the ETH nodes. The control panel for Blockchains Chainstack made use of the network’s protocol to uncover the information. This is the mechanism that ETH nodes use to find each other and to join the network. Each node maintains a list of all of the other nodes across the network.
Using the ethernodes.org, Chainstack found out the complete list of ETH nodes as well as their IP addresses and this allowed them to analyze where the nodes are being hosted and by which provider. The AWS hosting 25 percent of the Ethereum network is not the only scary thing since the top 10 cloud hosting providers are running with 57.3 percent of all ETH nodes between them. This also includes the Google Cloud Platform and Alibaba Cloud. This is a lot of centralization for a blockchain that claims to be decentralized and self-sovereign. Only 34 percent of the nodes are being run in the US and Bezos is taking up the majority of the stake. One analyst even pointed out:
‘’Let’s say Big Bad Bezos woke up tomorrow with a bone to pick with Ethereum. If it helps, imagine Amazon was about to release its own blockchain and a cryptocurrency to match.’’
As per the reports in the coming altcoin news, the ETH developers are working around the clock to try and scale the pure decentralized network so maybe Vitalik will take a step back.
