The AMD Hardware giant doesn’t plan on blocking ETH mining on its new GPUs but they are initially designed for gamers. In our latest Ethereum news today, we are reading more about it.
The company’s GPU architecture will be optimized for gamers especially but the AMD Hardware giant said that it won’t block ETH mining on them. The company told PC Gamer in a pre-briefing call for its new Radeon RX 6700 XT Graphics card:
“The short answer is no. We will not be blocking any workload, not just mining for that matter.”
Nvidia which is the main competitor of AMD, announced recently that it will enforce restrictions on the new GPUs and will prevent them from mining ETH. However, the company later published a developer version of the RTX 3060 GPU that enables users to bypass the hash rate limits. AMD on the other hand, won’t bother standing in the way of crypto mining as per Neelalojanan but there’s a catch. Neelalojanan explained that ADM optimized its chips for gamers:
“Clearly, gamers are going to reap a ton of benefit from this, and it’s not going to be ideal for mining workload. That all said, in this market, it’s always a fun thing to watch.”
The architecture is designed from the ground up especially for gaming and said that mining enjoys high bandwidth so there will still be some limitations from an architectural standpoint. In other words, the new GPUs can be used for mining but they are not the best choice for the job. High-end cards based on RDNA 2 infrastructure allow users to mine ETH at a hash rate of 58-64 MH/s while Nvidia’s 24 GB GeForce RTX 3090 can reach 120 MH/s.
In the short-term, Nvidia tried to place more restrictions on its GPUs that will make them not useful for ETH miners but in the long-run, Nvidia and AMD both will produce dedicated chipsets that are meant for crypto enthusiasts. The issue will resolve itself as ETH moves to Ethereum 2.0 and the upgrade will see the second biggest crypto switch to a proof of stake consensus mechanism that will render GPU mining obsolete.
