The Phoenix Hard Fork will make Ethereum Classic fully compatible with ETH after the five months of successful completion of the Agharta hard fork that happened on the block 9,573,300. In today’s Ethereum classic news, we can see that the developers announced a new upgrade dubbed Phoenix.
Phoenix is a system-wide upgrade that will take place on June 3rd at the block 10,500,839. According to the official announcement from the project the upcoming hard fork is a product of consensus between the members of the ETC ecosystem. Just like Atlantis and Agharta, the latest upgrade will enhance the interoperability Between Ethereum classic and Ethereum. Phoenix hard fork will make both of the chains compatible for the first time since the split four years ago.
The Ethereum classic chain was initially created in 2016 after the Ethereum Decentralized Autonomous Organization got about 11.5 million ETH hijacked. However, it recent times both of the networks started working together to become interoperable. The Phoenix hard fork will integrate the Ethereum Istanbul protocol upgrade on the Ethereum Classic chain by adding opcodes that already exist on the ETH network since the Istanbul upgrade of 2019.
While Phoenix is expected to go live on June 3rd, the date could chance as the network will get closer to the 10,500,839 blocks. The project said in the announcement that they have already successfully implemented all of the TestNets of the hard fork and the ETC core developers are now preparing to activate the MainNet. Since the break-up, Ethereum managed to become the largest DeFi chain while Ethereum Classic is ranked as the 20th largest coin. Terry Culver, the CEO of ETC Labs, explained that the upcoming fork is not only a turning point for ETC but also helps to demonstrate how strong the consensus among the stakeholders of the ETC community is:
“This upgrade demonstrates the robust development underway on Ethereum Classic, as it is the third hard fork in the last year, and reflects the strong community consensus among ETC stakeholders. The upgrade also marks an important turning point for Ethereum Classic, where now the community is in a position to drive more innovation, to collaborate, and to make fresh technical contributions to the ETC and ETH communities.’’
