Welcome to 2018 – a year when blockchain is part of almost every industry and niche. In recent news, the blockchain technology is planning to disrupt the legal industry too, after being under development for a new law firm.
According to two prominent blockchain industry attorneys, Angela Angelovska-Wilson and Lewis Cohen, blockchain is an inevitable part of the legal industry. In an interview with CoinDesk, these two lawyers revealed that they are starting their own law practice focused on the blockchain.
The firm’s name is DLx Law LLP and is based in New York and Washington, DC. The founders, Angelovska-Wilson (a previous general counsel and chief compliance officer at blockchain startup Digital Asset) and Cohen (a seasoned securities lawyer) are confident in the firm’s future, running it quite differently than the typical law practice. Their focus will align better with the culture of the blockchain space.
One of the examples is the fact that they will eliminate the term “partner” because according to them, it fosters a sense of possession. More importantly, DLx will accept payments in Bitcoin or Ether and down the road, will experiment with smart contracts and other ways of being paid for their legal services.
According to Cohen:
“Inherently, it was very clear to us the challenges in providing clients the kind of services that they need within a very large law firm,” Cohen said. “A week in blockchain time is like a month anywhere else.”
For now, the founders say that they will exclusively focus on blockchain technologies and help the firm assess risk with surgical precision. Their most prospective clients include startups, exchanges, and token issuers.
