The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the United Nations has to embrace blockchain technology as we are reading further in the upcoming blockchain news.
According to a Forbes report, the UN Secretary-General believes that the blockchain technology should be among the technologies that are used by the UN. He said:
“For the United Nations to deliver better on our mandate in the digital age, we need to embrace technologies like blockchain that can help accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.’’
This is not the first time that he spoke about the high potential of blockchain technology. As reported last year, he created at that time, a high-level panel on digital Cooperation which explicitly outlined blockchain technology on the agenda. Back in September in 2018, he spoke of how trust in national institutions in the states has declined slowly and how technologies, especially blockchain can help mitigate the problem. He, however, spoke less positively about cryptocurrencies:
“Organized criminal networks lurk on the dark web, profiting from encryption and near-anonymous cryptocurrency payments to traffic in people and illegal goods.”
After that, the chief of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Global Cybercrime Program Neil Wals said that crypto has to start combating money laundering much harder than they do now. Guterres created the digital cooperation program so the blockchain technology used on the United Nation’s part has seen huge growth. As reported recently, the UN launched a blockchain tool that aims to prevent the exploitation of migrant workers based in Hong Kong with blockchain-based financial services earlier this month. According to July reports, the UN is also working on some new blockchain solutions that will bring sustainable urban development in Afghanistan.
At last, the president of the United Nations’ agency for aviation, stated that the blockchain technology could offer a lot of benefits across aviation systems around the world.

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Capital Development Fund (UNDCF) are the two wings that entered into a partnership with Kiva, a technology nonprofit company that will lend its protocol to implement the ID system called “Credit Bureau Of The Future.” According to reports, the new system will allow the citizens of Sierra Leone to have complete and secure ownership of their identities, just like the blockchain assets in a decentralized network such as the one focused on Bitcoin.
