Solana Labs reveals a new smartphone in early 2023 dubbed SAGA while its next big bet for Web3 will likely be smartphones to match. Today in New York City, Solana Labs announced the launch of the Solana mobile stack software ecosystem along with the upcoming Android smartphone dubbed Saga. Solana Mobile Stack is an open-source software kit that is designed to enable the development of android apps that are built around the Solana blockchain. The kit includes the Mobile Wallet Adapter for plugging in mobile Solana wallets and according to the company, the feature will work on all mobile devices.
Another new feature dubbed Seed Vault is a software custody solution that keeps the private keys and the seed phrases as well as other sensitive information secure on the devices. SMS will include a Solana Pay option for android which enables mobile payments on the platform. Solana Labs will launch a new Solana dapp store that is designed for mobile devices and will provide easy access to Web 3 applications without fees. The SMS developer kit is available to download today. According to the company, the Solana Mobile Stack will enable new functionalities like minting of NFT assets as well as transactions on Solana but also more ways to play Solana-based games.
To help facilitate the spread of the Solana applications on mobile, Solana Labs will release an Android smartphone dubbed Saga and the device which will feature top-tier specs like Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Processor, OLED display, 512 GB of storage, and 12GB ram, will be released in early 2023. Saga will have a secure element hardware module and will help empower the Seed vault feature but also keep the private information protected from attacks. The phone is expected to have a retail price of $1000 while Solana labs will be taking $100 deposits and prioritizing the developers on the list. Early buyers will get a limited-edition NFT marking the launch of the phone which is seen as the first ticket to influencing the direction of the new SMS platform.
As a part of the Solana Mobile Stack Launch, the foundation will establish a $10 million ecosystem fund to provide grants for mobile creators. Co-founder Raj Gokal added:
“Developers can now bring the power of Solana to the computers in our pockets, not just our backpacks. Solana can revolutionize so much of what we do everyday, but we need to open the possibilities for decentralized apps on our mobile devices in order for this potential to be realized.”
