Things have been blooming lately for Samsung SDS, an IT subsidiary of the South Korean electronics giant. According to recent news, the company is believed to establish a blockchain-only platform aimed towards the public sector.
According to new reports, Samsung SDS has signed a new deal with the Seoul Metropolitan Government that acts as a backbone to developing a new form of ‘information strategy’ plan – using blockchain to support all the administration across welfare, public safety as well as transportation affairs.
According to Hong Won-pyo, CEO of Samsumg SDS:
“The blockchain technology can help us contribute to Seoul’s leap as a top-rated global city. Samsung SDS intends to contribute to the city becoming a world-class city by strengthening the transparency, fairness and civic convenience through its own blockchain technology and consulting capability.”
Seoul’s city government is now seeking to enhance the transparency and to improve the ease of use of the blockchain technology. However, what’s more interesting is the fact that Samsung made this deal only seven months after it unveiled Nexledger, the blockchain platform that is hosted in the cloud and aimed at blockchain.
The city government already identified a number of sectors for potential blockchain applications that include welfare, traffic, safety and similar municipal affairs. The idea here is to make most of blockchain and use it as the core element of a secure, immutable ledger that will record personal information of citizens.
The ultimate goal here is to expand the civic convenience and as Mr. Won-pyo said, to make Seoul one of the most modern cities when it comes to the blockchain technology as a great way to power the city’s entire municipal administration in four years. At least that is the goal that Samsung SDS has in terms of this technology.
This project marks Samsung’s first move into introducing the blockchain technology to the public sector – but definitely not the last one out there.
