Tatyana Moskalkova, a Russian Commissioner for Human Rights, has asked the Greek Justice Minister Michalis Kalogirou to extradite an alleged BTC Fraudster Alexander Vinnik to Russia according to reports that reached our blockchain news today.
Vinnik was an operator of the now-defunct BTC-e crypto exchange. Moskalkova asked the Greek minister to extradite Vinnik to Russia because of his quickly worsening health condition and because of the criminal proceedings against him in Russia. The commissioner visited Vinnik in a Greek hospital where she convinced him to end the hunger strike he started back in November 2018. The letter to the Greek minister states:
“I appeal to you, Mr. Minister, to extradite Alexander Vinnik, a citizen of the Russian Federation — against whom criminal proceedings have been instituted in the Russian Federation, and who is currently in a difficult family situation and health condition — to the Russian Federation for further investigation of his case.”
After the beginning of his hunger strike, Vinnik lost about 30 percent of his weight and was basically on the verge of dying.
Vinnik was the former operator of the BTC-e crypto exchange when he was arrested by Greek police back in 2017 in July under the order of the US Department of Justice. The authorities found him guilty of fraud and money laundering of about $4 billion in BTC in a period of six years.
At the same time, the French authorities also accused him of defrauding over 100 French people between 2016 and 2018.
