MTV has a new awards category this year – Best Metaverse performance, which has been added to the lineup of the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) 2022. This year, artists can vie for a prized award in this area.
The award presentation began in 1984 as a prestigious honor for music video expertise. Previous VMA winners have included major music acts such as Madonna, Nirvana, and Kanye West.
MTV Has A New Awards Category
The traditional award categories, such as “Video of the Year,” “Artist of the Year,” and “Song of the Year,” have a Web3 edge this year. The VMAs considered metaverse performances and created a fresh new award category.

Six artists are nominated in its maiden year. Nominations are as follows:
- The Rift Tour starring Ariana Grande (Fortnite),
- Blackpink’s The Virtual (PUBG Mobile),
- BTS (YouTube), Charli XCX (Roblox),
- Justin Bieber – An Interactive Virtual Experience (Wave),
- Twenty One Pilots Concert Experience are among them (Roblox).
Metaverse Experience Of The Show
Aside from a completely new award category, the award presentation unveiled its first-ever metaverse experience on August 12. The VMA Experience, which is available in the Roblox metaverse until September 3rd, was published last week by Paramount Game Studios.
Roblox, a virtual environment filled with pop culture events such as concerts and festivals, has two performances up for consideration. It collaborated with Insomniac, a big producer of electronic dance music festivals, last year to host virtual festivals in its metaverse.
But Why?
This year’s metaverse category follows five years of falling VMA viewership. MTV’s decision to feature virtual performance may help maintain the metaverse current as it expands and attracts younger listeners.
The music business is riddled with Web3 connections since it has been on a digital consumption trajectory for years with the launch of music streaming services. While some are using blockchain to enhance music licensing, artists are releasing singles as NFTs are now eligible for recognition on international charts.
Blockchain Music Licensing Platform
In July of this year, some companies unveiled their plans to construct blockchain music listening platforms that will change the way songs are licensed and are said to be able to reduce costs, by reducing intermediaries. Thus, they hope to bring all of the benefits of blockchain technology to the music industry.
Such platforms are still in their early stages though, but there is no doubt that we will see bigger and better integration of blockchain tech and the music industry in the coming years.
