The metaverse connects football rivals Barcelona FC and Real Madrid football club that have jointly filed a Web3 and metaverse trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The Metaverse Connects Football Rivals
Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, the current UEFA Champions League champions and two of the biggest names in soccer in Spain and the globe, have teamed together to further the adoption of Web3 and the metaverse.
According to a tweet from trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis, the application was submitted to the USPTO on August 5, 2022, for international classes 9 and 41, and it contains metaverse plans for both football teams.
Particularly, the items covered by the joint filing include virtual reality hardware, virtual reality goggles, and virtual reality helmets, as well as downloadable augmented reality software, virtual reality games, virtual reality simulations, augmented reality games, and virtual reality software for telecommunications, utilities, security, and cryptographic software.
Not only that, but the clubs’ class 9 application also lists an e-wallet solution and downloadable software for controlling cryptocurrency transactions on the blockchain.
Additionally, metaverse items like interactive entertainment and other digital collectible experiences are included in the clubs’ class 41 registration.
Brands Are Increasingly Entering the Metaverse
Just a few years ago, the only applications for blockchain technology were in the creation of cryptocurrencies and supply chain management programs. However, the popularity of play-to-earn games and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has made big businesses more aware of the possibilities of these digital treasures and the metaverse.
Notably, 2,700 Web3, NFT, and metaverse-related applications were submitted to the USPTO between January and May 2022 by several businesses hoping to benefit from the developing breakthrough technologies, including well-known organizations like Mastercard, Walmart, and others.
Barcelona signed a collaboration agreement with Chiliz and Socios.com for a blockchain-based fan interaction campaign in February 2020. In August 2022, Chiliz invested a whopping 0 million in Barca Studios, giving the latter a 24 percent share in the club’s center for the production and distribution of digital content.
