The application was in fact first filed on October 24th, 2016 – outlining that there are current difficulties with new nodes.
Currently, nodes ar required to individually verify a massive amount of data in order to be activated. Thanks to MasterCard’s new patent, there will be new nodes built that will verify “thousands, millions or billions of transaction records in a number of different blocks” that may accumulate over time in a given blockchain.
The new patent proposes a technical solution that will also aid with faster navigation. In such way, “fast track flags” would be included in block headers so that the new nodes could scan and verify the blockchain more quickly.
“A node in the blockchain network […] may quickly navigate the blockchain by identifying blocks that have activated fast track flags. For verification, the node may identify the earlier fast track block (e.g., based on timestamp) and hash that block […] and then verify that the fast track reference in the more recent fast track block is the same as the hash of the earlier fast track block.”
MasterCard’s patent also outlines the use of software for performing the following activities: querying, hashing, and signatory operations – all of which aiding system efficiency. So far, MasterCard has filed more than 30 patents related to the blockchain technology.
The company is therefore seen as one of the pioneers in the blockchain space.
