However, Ubisoft is one of the largest traditional game publishers in the world and it has dozens of international studios which signaled interest in blockchain technology by unveiling a proof-of-concept prototype dubbed HashCraft. Ubisoft continued on in the space by working with other crypto gaming startups with releasing new small-scale experiments. The blockchain ambitions came from the Strategic Innovation Lab which was headed by Nicolas Pouard:
It’s a think tank and a ‘do’ tank, as we like to put it. Our mission is to anticipate the future and help Ubisoft to be prepared for it.”
One Shot League looks like it is trying to create an accessible on-ramp to Sorare and the idea of crypto gaming. The game is in the middle of its initial five-week beta seasons which requires a Sorare account. It does not force the players to buy cards to handle cryptocurrencies but it does provide free digital cards for users to arrange fantasy lineups to try and earn points in the game.
There are plenty of benefits to using purchased Sorare cards in the form of performance boosts so for the players, it’s another way to make the most of their investments. The Strategic Lab is actually the developer for One Shot League and it is now branded mainly as a Sorare product but rather an experience that makes use of the Sorare assets. According to Pourad this was one of the benefits like the interoperability between games that share the same assets.
Crypto gaming company Enjin for example made interchangeable Ethereum multiverse assets which is a key pillar of the development platform while also developing a server plug for Minecraft that lets users bring assets into the game. Pouard commented:
“Since then, we didn’t really see experiments giving a real chance of building a true side game around blockchain assets built by another company. That’s what we wanted to explore: how we could change the gamers’ behavior using these assets, and how it could change the value of these assets. “
