A new blockchain based infrastructure is being built by the FedEx Institute of Technology and their partner, the company Good Speherd Pharmacy in order to develop a system to help cancer patients get medications.
The news comes from a report by the news outlet Commercial Appeal on July 6th. As Fedex announced, they are promoting an interdisciplinary research in emerging technologies and also collaborating with the research infrastructure of the University of Memphis. It all began in February 2018 for the two organizations – and their goal is to make the University of Memphis a center of technology and research.
The partnership will work towards developing an immutable ledger that would allow for a safe and confidential distribution of medical information. According to the CEO of Good Shepherd Pharmacy:
“In Tennessee alone, over $10 million worth of perfectly good prescription medication gets flushed down the toilet every year. Blockchain is the solution for that problem. The REMEDI project (REclaiming MEDicine) will divert valuable medication into the hands of patients who would not otherwise use it.”
The institute will also host an event and therefore attract blockchain experts and enthusiasts to discuss the proposed initiative, held in tandem with Blockchain 901 which is an organization that aims to expand the workforce in the Memphis area.
According to the CEO of FedEx, blockchain is the “next frontier that will change the worldwide supply chains”. In February 2018, FedEx joined the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA) which is a group that includes the rail operator BNSF, GE Transportation and JD Logistics.
