The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned Internet users about the false death threats as a new method of cryptocurrency extortion, according to a report in ABC california on Friday January 26th.
The victims are numerous and one of them is introducing themselves as Christiane, informing the agency that she received an email with a scary death threat. The email read “I will be short. I have an order to kill you”, demanding Christiane to pay $2,800 in US dollars or Bitcoin in order to be spared by the assassin.
Even though Christiane saw that this is an obvious scam, she told ABC7 that she found the message distressing and couldn’t sleep at night in fear of potential threat on th eway. However, an FBI agent named Laura Eimillier stated that these emails are structured in a way that is likely to make the target feel deeply affected – and act as a new way of online extortion.
Eimillier said that “about 15 percent of the scams that are actually taking place,”. She added that the crimes like these are “heavily underreported.”
If you receive a similar threat on your email, make sure to notify the authorities and take part in an active investigation.
