The fears of the COVID-19 known as the Coronavirus are growing everywhere around the world as the deadly virus spreads with more cases in every country. For many, this event has been described as the “black swan” of the decade – a metaphor for large, unexpected events that wreak havoc across finance, science and technology. Thirteen years after the term was coined, the world is reeling from the latest black swan in the form of the coronavirus and the London Blockchain Week is one of the recent events in crypto which felt the effects.
The latest blockchain news show that many public events are being canceled around the world and that a lot of people are reluctant to travel until the COVID-19 scare blows over. Event organizers at the summit must also adapt to keep the show on the road.
The Coronavirus also affects WeWork Blockchain Labs which was set to host an evening event at the Canary Wharf site on March 9, but has instead shifted to live streaming the event online because of the risks associated with physical meetups:
“Dear all, we have received communication from many people that because of the very short notice for this meetup they would have not been able to physically attend the presentation at the Wework labs, and because the presentation is going to be live-streamed from the USA, we have decided to make this our very first LIVE webinar!”
It is also very likely that the Coronavirus fears played into the event’s cancellation. In the other cryptocurrency news, we can see that the attendance in many events was remarkably low, both from panelists and audience members. Some speakers are even placed under travel bans by their employers and others told the media that they had travel bans enforced since they arrived in London for the event.
Still, there are events that are set to continue despite the Coronavirus fears. The CryptoCompare Digital Asset Summit is one of them. To symbolize that safety is on the mind of the organizers, an “Attendee Health & Safety” has been posted on the homepage of the summit and reads:
“CryptoCompare takes the welfare of our community very seriously and has been closely monitoring Coronavirus, taking our advice from, and following the guidelines of Public Health England and the respective governments of the infected areas.”
