BitMEX alerts its clientele issuing an announcement that all of the users’ emails were accidentally revealed via carbon copy. In today’s blockchain news, we try to find out more about it.
On Friday, (October 31) at 08:00 UTC, BitMEX alerts its users via a blog and Twitter that it had accidentally exposed all of the details about the users’ emails via a carbon copy so if you have an account with this exchange, anyone that obtained the email has a portion of what’s needed to access your account. This also potentially opens a door for targeted phishing attacks.
According to the data tweeted by the analytics company Skew, BitMEX has about 22,000 users every day. The blog stated:
“We are aware that some of our users have received a general user update email earlier today, which contained the email addresses of other users. Our team has acted immediately to contain the issue and we are taking steps to understand the extent of the impact.”
BitMEX, as one of the largest crypto exchanges in the industry, has now asked the customers to add BitMEX’s support email to their contact lists in order to lower down the chances of possible phishing emails along with adding 2-factor authentication. The exchange appeared to suggest that a bug caused the incident by saying that the ‘’error which was caused this has been identified and fixed.’’
The unfortunate event adds to the woes of the exchange which is also currently being probed by the U.S. Commodity Futures Exchange Commission over whether it has allowed the traders from the United States to use its platform. The GEO-blocks of the exchange prohibits multiple countries from participating in the exchange including the United States. Some of the users might have used the exchange by using virtual private networks (VPNs).
One of the biggest crypto derivatives markets known for its leverage rates of more than 100x, BitMEX, operates from Seychelles. The platform has its largest product the XBT/USD trade pair which had a 24-hour trade volume of about $2.8 billion as of the time of writing according to multiple reports.
How will BitMEX resolve the issue with the potential security threats, we are going to find out in the upcoming news.
