Filing IPO prospectuses at the same moment, both Alibaba and OneConnect have become the highest patent holders in China according to China’s recent Blockchain Patents list as we are reading today in the blockchain news.
Having many corporations that are fighting for the leading position in the development of blockchain technology which is raging across the globe. On November 18th, ten days ago BlockData published a new report under the name China Blockchain Patents Report 2019 and the Comprehensive Strenght list of China’s Blockchain Patents. Alibaba and OneConnect both appeared on the lists.
There is no doubt according to the report, for which are the strongest Chinese companies in blockchain patenting, with Alibaba holding the first place on the list. Nonetheless, the second place is taken by OneConnect. When it comes to the strength of blockchain-related patents OneConnect is first on the list, being second overall. The rankings include a few factors including the scope of the protection of the patent, the application for the patent, the number of applications, the number of granted applications and the patent family location.
There is still something that these companies share besides being the first two blockchain patent holders in China. Issuing the IPO prospectuses on the same day in the US and Hong Kong alike is what they decided and both have in common. This move attracted huge attention since it was done shortly before the publication of the list.
On November 13th, two weeks ago, Alibaba submitted the preliminary prospects and it appeared on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong SEHK. The company stated that they want to issue as many as 500 new shares that will appear on the SEHK mainboard. About 6,170 authorized patents and more than 13,300 patent applications are held by Alibaba only in China. In other countries, the company has more than 3,112 authorized patents and 9,700 new applications from this year only.
As stated above, on November 13th OneConnect applied for the IPO. The company asked the US SEC to approve the blockchain project and demanded that their 542 foreign patents and 2,850 domestic ones should be approved. But, on the basis of the strength of its blockchain patents, OneConnect ended up being the top-ranking firm.
