The computing giant IBM has recently been awarded a contract that will see the company develop blockchain and other digital technology initiatives – directly for the government of Australia. The contract is worth $1 billion AUD (Australian dollars) and is set for five years.
In what is close to $740 million USD, this contract is rumored to be Australia’s latest attempt to pioneer in the field of blockchain and enter the “top 3 blockchain governments” by 2025 by investing in various tools and research for the technology.
Announced this Thursday, the contract will focus on blockchain but also quantum computing and artificial intelligence. As the managing director of IBM Australia & New Zealand, David La Rose, said:
“This agreement is a testament to our forty-year partnership with the Australian Government. It shows trust and belief in our ability to transform and provide world-leading capabilities, leveraging our investments locally in AI, blockchain, quantum and cloud.
We look forward to helping the Australian Government to re-define the digital experience for the benefit of all Australians.”
What’s most interesting in this scenario is the fact that IBM already had agreements in place with four federal agencies. The new contract, which spearheaded by the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) and runs through June 2023, will extend the public-private partnership to the remainder of the government too.
