Bitcoin Pizza day is a very important day for the crypto community especially the Bitcoin one in particular. This represents a huge milestone for this cryptocurrency.
It was almost 10 years ago when a Bitcoin user bought two pizzas using only his bitcoins and this is recorded as the first ever purchase of a good with a cryptocurrency. The user, Laszlo Hanyecz bought two pizzas for 10.000 BTC from Papa John’s in the USA. However, it was not really a direct purchase because a teenager named Jeremey Sturdivant actually accepted the bitcoin and sent the pizza to Laszlo.
Today, if you would like to buy a pizza that is about $20, it would cost you approximately 0.0025 BTC and you could literally buy it directly from a pizza shop. There are plenty of services such as PizzaForCoins that accept multiple cryptocurrencies as a payment or others that offer a gift card to its users that can later be used to buy some pizza with Bitcoin. This gift card can be used online and you can eventually buy pizza from Domino’s.
Today, Hanyecz is still very active in the crypto community and he is working on a new technology that will help him to reduce transaction times and costs on the Bitcoin network. He stated: “So is there any point to doing this instead of an on chain transaction? For what I described here, probably not. The goal was just to play around with c-lightning and do something more than shuffling a few satoshi back and forth. Maybe eventually pizza shops will have their own lightning nodes and I can open channels to them directly.”
