Elections are always the subject of scrutiny and corruption and this is one of the biggest reasons why people in the tech sector are trying to figure out a way how to prevent it. Some believe exactly blockchain technology will help in doing so.
There are plenty use-cases already and plenty of countries are now implementing blockchain technology to improve all election activities and countries are experimenting with how the distributed ledger technology can improve transparency and security.
The first country to announce that they are implementing blockchain technology was Sierra Leone in order to provide transparent presidential elections. The technology, however, wasn’t directly used to tally the votes but it was used to demonstrate how elections could be conducted in the future. Right with Sierra Leone comes West Virginia which conducted the first government blockchain supported voting in the history of US. Here too wasn’t really a full blockchain election but the response was extremely positive.
The blockchain allows users to vote more transparently and helps following the votes in order to be easily counted but still maintaining the privacy of the voters. Security is the most important part of elections and this is why the blockchain technology can help. The blockchain is still in the early stages of disruption, but other than voting this technology is now being used in banks, major corporations, and politics. The potential is endless and global adoption will lead to a worldwide infrastructure being created.
