According to US Authorities, a woman allegedly paid in BTC to have her ex-husband murdered via Dark Web, so let’s find out more about this story in our BTC news.
Prosecutors alleged that a Nevada woman allegedly paid $5,000 in BTC to have a hitman kill her abusive ex-husband but the website was a scam and she was arrested. She paid the needed sum to hire a hitman to shoot her ex-husband dead according to the court documents, so the authorities arrested her and indicted her this week. The woman paid using Bitcoin on a dark web marketplace but the website was a scam so the authorities had no trouble finding her.
Kristy Lynn Felkins,36 of Fallon, Nevada, paid $5000 in BTC via a phony website that is no longer active, trying to hire a hitman according to the US District Court for the Eastern District of California documents. The federal investigators busted Felkins when they received a tip-off about the website so they tracked her down and her BTC transaction to find the incriminating messages and arrest her.
The alleged murder plot started in 2016 as she started speaking with someone on the website using the Tor browser. The website told Felkins that she needed to hide her transaction so she had to launder the BTC by trading it with different sellers on the peer-to-peer BTC marketplace LocalBitcoins.com. according to the documents, Felkins was skeptical about the website and even asked:
“How do I know you are not FBI, they do have the capability to infect one’s device and trace them back to their real IP. Just being cautious.”
However, she proceeded with the transactions and sent 12 BTC between March 6 and March 9 in 2016 to have her ex-husband killed outside of his workplace. The documents alleged that Felkins asked if the murder could be made to look like a mugging gone wrong but that would cost $4000 more so she just asked to proceed with the initial plan. The scam website asked her reasons and she wrote:
“This man mentally, physically, sexually and emotionally abused me. I ran, and then he took my children away from me. He now mentally abuses my children and threatens their physical well being. He is quite the snake and master manipulator.”
The website told Felkins that her husband could not be found at his workplace so when she asked for proof that they found his whereabouts, the website sent a sketchy photo of the location. Felkins stopped communicating with the website which is now closed.
