The Ring cameras sold by Amazon seem to be extremely vulnerable as reports emerged that hackers demanded bitcoin ransom from users with vulnerable devices as we are reading further today in the Bitcoin news now.
Bitcoin is continuously used as a means of extracting payments or blackmailing people in exchange for data. Ransomware attacks happen when hackers infect users’ devices, encrypt their files and then demand bitcoin payments in order to get a decryption key from the victim. In many cases, these attacks can be damaging which was seen countless times when hackers locked 10 years’ worth of government data in Argentina and demanded BTC in order to return the files. However, the recent misuse of Bitcoin was reported as a part of the latest lawsuit against Amazon and the Ring Cameras which are a subsidiary company of the commerce giant.
According to the lawsuit against Amazon and Ring, both of the companies are sued for $5 million after they sold the vulnerable cameras to their users. Alabama’s John Baker Orange and multiple other families across the US reported that they were harassed by the online criminals who hacked their cameras. So far, four families have reported similar issues from Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, and Texas. The customers also reported that the hackers have used the outdoors cameras to spy on them and talk to their children to conduct destructive behavior and demanded bitcoin ransom to leave them alone.
The Cameras operate via Wi-Fi and they come with default passwords that any hackers can use to gain access to the device. Ring was certain that its products do not have a security flaw since the cameras were extremely affordable, easy to install and simple to use. However, when it comes to the strength of the password, it only depends on the choice of the customer. The company didn’t share any details about the legal side of the things bud did respond to accusations of selling vulnerable products. Ring said that the flaw is with the consumers themselves as the company says that the buyers didn’t properly secure their cameras.
According to the company, the consumers didn’t change these passwords or they used very weak passwords that they use for their online accounts. This only shows how online hackers are creative and can get by when it comes to stealing people’s money. They hack all kinds of devices that allow them to spy on innocent consumers and they also demand payments in form of crypto which is much more difficult to track.
