The Ledger leak led to another Bitcoin investor getting threatened with murder and kidnapping after the cold storages of the wallet database were leaked on a hackers’ forum. Instead of the initial 9000 customers that Ledger said were affected, there were actually 270,000 individuals that had their addresses, phone numbers, and their names more public as we reported previously in the crypto news.
As days go by, the impact of the Ledger leak led to a spread and show just how scary things are about to get for innocent victims. In a post on Reddit, one BTC investor revealed that the Ledger leak brought very big problems for him as he was threatened that he will be kidnapped and murdered by being stabbed to death if the attackers locate his residence. Now, other Ledger users are scared to even more. As new investors came into the crypto space, they are urged to move more money off the centralized exchanges and into cold storage wallets that they own to prevent hacks. The reason for this advice is due to the fact that most exchanges are keeping the assets in hot wallets that are always connected to the internet which makes the funds accessible to hackers.
Moving ETH, BTC, and other crypto assets to an offline security device such as Ledger is the perfect solution. But the crypto investors learned the hard way that keeping oneself and one’s assets safe and secure while maintaining physical safety is not always simple. People that want to protect their funds are now finding that their homes and families are at risk.
In just a few days of warnings due to the data leak involving the private details of 270,000 users, stories started to pour in from plenty of users. One Twitter user claims that the hackers obtained their SIM that was used to access the coinbase accounts that he owned. A self-proclaimed “meth-addict” phoned one Ledger customer claiming that he will find his house and if the user doesn’t send him 10 XMR, he will stab him to death and any other family members that are found at the house.
The user feared for the lives of his family and was forced to call the police who place a squad car outside of the residence. Because privacy is a critical component of crypto, you should always consider taking additional steps like creating a pseudonym and use the alternative addresses and phone numbers when creating accounts that are related to buying BTC or altcoins.
