Heather Morgan from the Bitfinex case, accused of laundering $3.6 billion of BTC was detained ahead of the trial but now she is released and is pending trial so let’s find out more about it in today’s latest cryptocurrency news.
The US Federal Judge ordered Ilya Lichtenstein to be detained pretrial while indicating that his wife Heather Morgan met the criteria for supervised release. Chief Judge Beryl Howell ruled in favor of Morgan in terms of supervised release. The Judge argued that Morgan’s role in trying to launder the stolen BTC from the Bitfinex hack in 2016 was outweighed by her husband’s involvement so she was released on a $3 million bond and she posted her parent’s home as collateral.
Lichtenstein on the other hand was detained ahead of the trial as the Judge considered him to be a flight risk since he had the motivation to flee and has the resources to do so. The lawyer of the couple claimed that they have no intention to flee citing family ties in the US so he also noted that the husband and wife had embryos frozen in New York and are planning to conceive a child which suggests they intend to stay in the country. The couple got arrested for conspiring to launder most of the BTC stolen in the infamous Bitfinex hack in 2016.
With BTC’s price appreciation in the past six years, the amount stolen is in the billions now making it the biggest seizure for the DOJ ever. While the US authorities, users of the exchange, and Bitfinex itself are yet to determine what will happen to the recovered bitcoins, Netflix jumped on board and now wants to release a documentary on what really happened.

The makers of “Tiger King” are tagged to produce the new documentary about the Bitfinex hack and money-laundering scheme from 2016 which netted the scammers $4.5 billion in BTC. The producers are joining forces to create the new Netflix documentary on the true-life story of Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan who were arrested this week and accused of conspiring to launder $4.5 billion in BTC while the government seized $3.6 billion of the total. Netflix announced today that it got the green light to produce the series about the couple who tried to launder the funds from the Bitfienx hack in 2016 as one of the biggest exchange hacks in BTC history.
