In the latest crypto news, we are focusing on the Bitcoin scams section and ‘Lazarus’ which is the name of the infamous hacking group from North Korea.
According to a new article that was published by The Next Web last Friday, the annual report from a cybersecurity vendor Group-IB showed that ‘Lazarus’ was behind 14 major crypto hacks on exchanges since January 2017, stealing more than $571 million from the attacks.
The news also backs up some claims from officials in South Korea, who earlier this year said that North Korean hackers stole tens of millions of dollars’ worth of crypto in 2017. The National Intelligence Service of the country confirmed this, saying that phishing scams and other crime methods are more common, yielding tens of billions of won (the country’s fiat currency) in customer funds.
The Group-IB report also showed that $882 million in cryptocurrency was stolen from exchanges from 2017 to 2018, according to the report’s summary obtained by the tech news source.
Among the most common methods that hackers use, there is the spear phishing attack, the social engineering scam, and malware that targets crypto owners in the illicit trade. Speaking of, the targets are ‘lured’ with an email or an attachment as the “main vector of attack” according to the report.
