The flagship cryptocurrency is being used again for illicit activity, and the anonymous hackers have exposed vehicle information of millions of Russians in exchange for cryptocurrency.
As the reports by the Russian news agency RBC show, the leaked information consists of full names, addresses, passport numbers and other data that belongs to millions of Russian car drivers.
Hackers are selling the stolen data and claim that it is leaked from the registry of Russia’s patrol jurisdiction, which is the General Administration for Traffic Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. The authenticity of the data has been confirmed by an employee of a local sharing company, the report notes.
In times when the Bitcoin news show a price increase for the dominant coin, the leaked data cites an original report by the publication Vedomosti. As such, the full version of this database that the hackers are selling costs 0.3 BTC. In addition to this, the hackers also offered to purchase some “exclusive” data for 1.5 BTC (equivalent to around $14,500 at press time) as the report notes.
All of this shows that the Bitcoin scams are still there and crypto in general is used for illicit activity on darknet markets. As reports by Chainalysis (a NY-based blockchain analytics firm) show, the volume of darknet markets’ crypto flows doubled in 2019 for the first time in 4 years.
Additionally, cybercriminals and hackers are selling legitimate information obtained in dark ways from central registries in an attempt to earn BTC as a non-traceable payment method. In mid-April 2020 alone, hackers were selling more than 500,000 accounts of the popular video conferencing platform Zoom for less than a penny each, reports show.
It is clear that regulation must step into the world of cryptocurrency – at least as an attempt to make it more secure and make people aware of the fact that crypto can be used in different ways. For now, there are more Bitcoin scams and criminals are taking advantage of the privacy and anonymity of crypto in general – selling various types of information on the darknet.
