A couple of days ago, we reported about a malware that used more than 1 million computers in China in order to hack more than $2 million worth of cryptocurrencies. What started as nice-looking plugins that ‘help your browser speed’ and serve other purposes turned to a malware that was used by the Chinese hackers in a million computers, using their CPU to mine crypto.
However, a joint effort between several Chinese law enforcement agencies and the police saw 20 individuals apprehended, 11 out of which released on bail and 9 of them detained.
The hackers are responsible for controlling more than 389 million computers across China – and 1 million computers for the hacker group.
It seems like the security team at Tencent Keeper Program knows what they are doing. After they detected a game plug-in containing a Trojan horse program in January 2018, the team now pinpointed a new malware inside the plugins – finding out that it has mined more than 26 million coins including DigiByte (DGB), Decred (DCR) and Siacoin (SC) which totaled into more than 15 million Chinese yuan.
According to the police, these hacker groups work in a sophisticated way that is hard to recognize. Once they choose a couple of cryptocurrencies, they attempt to gain control of other computers and install virtual currency mining programs – therefore mining cryptocurrencies in the background and transferring them back to the hacker group for a quick cashout.
