Wikipedia Stops Accepting BTC And ETH Donations: Report

Wikipedia stops accepting BTC and ETH donations after eight years and has done it with the help of BitPay so let’s read more today in our latest Bitcoin news.

Wikipedia’s parent organization – Wikimedia Foundation, won’t be accepting any donations in BTC, ETH, or Bitcoin Cash after some community members sparked a debate about the pros and cons of crypto. The news came after the foundation conducted a poll with about 70% of the respondents saying they want this option discontinued for all crypto donations:

“The Wikimedia Foundation has decided to discontinue direct acceptance of cryptocurrency as a means of donating … we are making this decision based on recent feedback from [volunteers and donor] communities.”

The foundation started accepting Bitcoin in 2014 and back then, it reasoned that adding BTC as a donation option will help to make contributions to the Wikimedia Foundation as inclusive as possible. Wikipedia has put a huge emphasis on being a global platform supporting content in 326 different languages. The foundation worked with Coinbase and will accept BTC donations before switching to BitPay and facilitate donations in additional cryptocurrencies. However, Wikipedia’s exposure to crypto was not so significant before the ban and in 2021, the Wikimedia Foundation recieved crypto from 347 different donors with the Community Relations Specialist Julia Brungs writing that the donations made up only 0.08% of the foundation’s revenue last year have never held crypto:

“In the last financial year the most used cryptocurrency was Bitcoin. We have never held cryptocurrency, and spot-convert donations daily into fiat currency (USD), which doesn’t have a significant environmental impact.”

As Wikipedia stops accepting BTC, the software engineer and editor Molly White noted that about 400 community members took part in the discussion on whether to discontinue this service. Many of the accounts are single-purpose accounts that were created to take part in the discussion alone and persuade the foundation against crypto. A huge argument against crypto was the issue of environmental sustainability and there are a number of energy-efficient blockchains that don’t use PoW mining like Tezos, Solana, Cardano, and Avalanche.

Those in favor of crypto donations cited a need for donation in countries where Wikipedia is deemed illegal and censored and argued that because BTC is a legal tender in El Salvador, the foundation could allow people to donate in their country’s official currencies.
