WikiLeaks has reportedly received more than $45 million in Bitcoin according to the number of coins that are held by its wallet address so let’s find out in the latest cryptocurrency news what this means exactly.
On the Bitcoin subreddit ‘’Boredguy32’’ revealed that the controversial organization WikiLeaks has about 4.054 BTC in their wallets. Based on the current price of the largest cryptocurrency converted to fiat, it reaches about $46.2 million. According to the Reddit user, the organization switched the wallets in 2018 but the analysis shows that the wallets provide a complete picture of how much bitcoin WikiLeaks actually acquired over the years.
A large part of these bitcoins has to do with donations that are sent from people that want to support WikiLeaks in exposing government secrets. As noted previously in 2016, the total value of all Bitcoin donations received by the organization reached about $22 million. When the authorities arrested the founder of the organization Julian Assange, the defense fund that was set up for him acquired about $30,000 in donations in just a few weeks. Whether the company still has a large part of the received funds is not known. Given the controversial nature of WikiLeaks and its operations, the funds are mainly used to cover the legal fees and to support the activities regarding the exposure of secret information.
It is also very possible that WikiLeaks moved a huge part of the funds into an unknown wallet address so the organization could have more funds that are unknown and as the time goes by, it could mean that it is sitting on a fortune. WikiLeaks created the first bitcoin wallet back in 2011 but it had started using bitcoin earlier than that. The unknown Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto reportedly noted:
‘’I make this appeal to WikiLeaks not to try to use Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a small beta community in its infancy. You would not stand to get more than pocket change, and the heat you would bring would likely destroy us at this stage.’’
As noted in the best cryptocurrency news sites, Assange didn’t bring the massive heat onto Bitcoin at that time and the quote from Nakamoto was the last entry on the forum before he/she vanished forever.
