The well-known cybersecurity pioneer-turned-crypto-troll John McAfee is again making the news – this time setting his sights on the HitBTC which is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world.
It all began for McAfee last week when without any clear provocation, he called for a boycott on the Hong Kong-based exchange which has more than $270 million in its daily trading volume.
As he said in a tweet:
The crypto exchanges have become the thing that we have originally fought against. Their power is immense. Hitbtc, for example, has increased suffering for millions of poor people who cannot afford the minimum buy-in since it is greater than their monthly income. Boycott them.

As many would say, McAfee seems to be pointing out to the withdrawal fees that HitBTC charges when customers remove assets from the platform. However, this is not the only case when an exchange charges fees. McAfee’s tweets, on the other hand, are not telling the exact nature of his grievance.
John McAfee also claims to have been the victim of a failed assassination attempt, continuing his verbal assault through Twitter – and vowing to be HitBTC’s “worst enemy” until the company takes steps to address the issue.
HitBTC has responded with an official formal response on Saturday, thanking him – with what looks cheekily – for taking the “discourse to another level” and explaining the company’s policy on the withdrawal fees.
“Thank you for being the voice of the crypto community!, the note concluded. “We share your values!”
McAfee disagreed with this and replied:
“Your algorithm killed an unknown number of people. You tell me what algorithm recompenses these deaths. You have unjustly subgected Docademic [sic]. Tell me sir what do you owe to them? Docademic deserves your highest priority to make things just for your past offenses.”
Meanwhile, McAfee is known in the Twitter world for charging $105,000 per tweet to promote Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and despite his recent claims that he won’t do this anymore, he has been shilling a token named Docademic on his Twitter account for several weeks and claiming it could hit $10 per unit by next year (up from the current value of $0.25)
