Edward Snowden supported Bitcoin during a crypto conference saying that Bitcoin is free money and that nowadays criminals use the dollars, not the bitcoins. In the altcoin news below, we read more about his new stance on crypto.
Snowden pointed out that criminals prefer the dollars rather than Bitcoin. He is most famous for leaking government data and secrets while he worked for the NSA. He publicly published thousands of documents about how the government tortures and collects data from people from their computers. He gave the story to the journalist Glenn Greenwald. He is now staying in Russia for many years after he successfully executed a perfect getaway.
During his conference talk, he explained the way how Bitcoin gives the people more power which the government has taken from them away. He noted that nowadays you cannot send money freely around the world but cryptocurrencies help bring this back. He stated:
“Today, you’re allowed some free speech online, and the worst case, you’re going to get kicked off of YouTube. You’re going to kicked off of Twitter. This is a big level of interference, but it’s happening from private companies, rather than governments. […] We can’t do the same thing when we send money. […] Bitcoin is free money.”
Snowden referred to ‘’freedom’’ mainly rather than the price. He rarely spoke on the subject of privacy coins such as Zcash and Monero which help people have much more benefits by hiding their identities. He didn’t use his time to talk about them, however. Edward Snowden mainly spoke about Bitcoin and the idea of privacy in a way to protect yourself:
“Privacy is that thing that says you belong to you rather than socSnowdeiety.”
In 2018, Snowden declared that Bitcoin will likely not last although the blockchain could be here for a long time. Snowden stated that he believes Bitcoin is a great idea but doesn’t think that the current design is going to work out in the long term. As reported in some of the best cryptocurrency news sites, he stated at that time:
“One day capital-B Bitcoin will be gone, but as long as there are people out there who want to be able to move money without banks, cryptocurrencies are likely to be valued.”
