The Canadian truckers raised $700,000 in BTC despite initially having their GoFundMe campaign blocked out of $10 million in donations and now it seems they have Elon Musk’s support so let’s find out more today in our latest Bitcoin news.
The “Freedom Convoy” of Canadian truckers in Ottawa raised about $700,000 in BTC from more than 4877 donors after their GoFundMe donations were blocked. The group garnered support from Elon Musk who believes that crypto cannot be stopped and he also tweeted “Canadian Truckers rule.”
The trucker convoy made international headlines and was formed in opposition to nationwide vaccination mandates on the truckers that enter Canada from the US. It has since evolved to object to all of the COVID-19 health restrictions which ended up spawning similar protests throughout Canada. Ottawa police are trying to reign the convoy over concerns of their trucks blocking city streets and interacting with the local businesses. The law enforcement also collaborated with GoFundMe to have the donations for the truckers blocked. The auction struck a bad chord with some Canadian BTC supporters opposed to financial censorship and the COVID restrictions as well.
In response to GofundMe blockade, the BTC sessions Youtuber from Calgary started a fundraiser for the protest using the BTC platform “Tallycoin.” Because BTC is a peer to peer payment network, it makes it harder for governments to prevent users from sending money to certain causes and one donor even said:
“Thank you TRUCKERS. You have made me proud to be Canadian again.”
The donor list includes Kraken exchange CEO Jesse Powell who sent one BTC to the cause:
Fix the money, fix the world. Mandates are immoral. End the madness. Honk Honk!”
The funds are being directed towards a multisig wallet that is controlled by BTC sessions, Greg Foss and Jeff Booth as well as Francis Pouliot. The multisig crypto wallet is one that needs authorization from multiple parties before the funds are able to be used. The fifth person is known as “Nobody Caribou” acts as a liaison between Bitcoiners and the protest organizers in Ottawa. In a press release, he mentioned using the funds to supply the truckers with water and gas and put the funds to work as legal defense funds.
