The BTC core developer Samuel Dobson is the second developer to leave Bitcoin Core in the past two months and announced on Twitter that he is stepping down after three years because he can no longer dedicate the time required as he approached the end of his Ph.D so let’s find out more in today’s Bitcoin news.
As a Bitcoin core wallet maintainer, Dobson directed access to the crypto’s code on GitHub with more permission to approve changes and to make improvements to the BTC software and he was also responsible for ensuring the protocol security. When asked if there’s a chance that he will come back as a BTC Core developer, Dobson answered that his Ph.D is his primary focus at the moment and he hasn’t decided what he will do after he graduates but he is not interested in the development of other cryptocurrencies.
I am officially stepping down as a maintainer of Bitcoin Core.
Serving as the wallet maintainer for the past three years has been an absolute privilege, and I want to thank my incredibly generous sponsor John Pfeffer (@jlppfeffer) for his support throughout. /1

Samuel Dobson noted that he is grateful for the support of the generous sponsor John Pfeffer and said that without him he would have not been able to prioritize working on BTC part-time. He made an appeal to the Twitter community to consider supporting the developer due to the nature of open-source projects. He also said:
“Bitcoin Core development has obviously grown immensely since its conception back with Satoshi. As an open-source project, it will always be in an interesting and more difficult position funding-wise, but things like Brink, Chaincode, Spiral, and direct developer sponsorship via GitHub have helped a lot.”
Bitcoin already had two maintainers since October and with Dobson leaving, the number of developers with access to Bitcoin’s code dropped to five as per the latest reports on the Bitcoin Forum. As recently reported, The Bitcoin developers get closer to implementing smart contracts on the protocol as they merged Schnorr’s improvement proposal BIP-340 with Bitcoin’s master library.

The soft fork is the next big update to Bitcoin after SegWit since the launch in 2017. The update will be backward compatible so the usage will depend on the demand from miners and users. The coding expert Pieter Wuille merged the support for Schnorr signatures to BTC while the Taproot merger and the soft fork update are the main steps for smart contract implementation on the Bitcoin network.
