Hacks are also possible in the cryptocurrency world – and a hacker proved that last night, breaching the cryptocurrency mining marketplace named NiceHash and stealing more than $62 million worth of bitcoins.
It all began when the NiceHash website went offline earlier in the day, with the company chalking it up to maintenance.

However, it wasn’t long before the team revealed that they were actually hacked through an announcement posted all over their social media channels. This confirmed the fears of many people who were speculating the potential hack for hours.
The company wrote ” Unfortunately, there has been a security breach involving NiceHash website. Importantly, our payment system was compromised and the contents of the NiceHash Bitcoin wallet have been stolen. We are working to verify the precise number of BTC taken.”
Even though NiceHash hasn’t yet confirmed the exact number of bitcoins they were stolen, its users have circulated a wallet address that suggests that around 4,376.42 BTC were stolen, with a current worth of more than $65 million dollars with the current price of Bitcoin being more than $15,000.
In the meantime, the company advised all of its users to change their online passwords and protect themselves in addition to the stolen funds. Even though NiceHash was a trusted market founded in 2014 which allowed people to buy and sell hash power and mine Bitcoin without purchasing or operating the equipment themselves, this recent incident showed that cloud mining services are very delicate and a target of many hackers.
For now, there is no shortcut to returning any of this money – which is another reason why security is one of the most important things in the crypto world.
