One Brazilian entrepreneur has been in the news lately for creating a coffee machine that runs on Bitcoin, in an attempt to show the world that the flagship cryptocurrency has many use cases as well as “programmable money”.
There is even a video of the coffee machine published on YouTube but firstly shared with a BTC-focused group of facebook. This made the rounds on social media, especially because the machine is activated every time a specific amount of BTC is sent to a wallet connected to it.
You can see the video below:
As you can see in the video, the machine uses a QR code that allows potential users – in this case, Reis – to send over funds and pay for some coffee. As he explains, the payment is what triggers the machine’s engine.
Reis has explained how this Bitcoin-powered coffee maker works in a Medium blog post, sharing many details. Aside from this, he spoke to a Brazilian news outlet Portal do Bitcoin where he noted that even though crypto is not his main thing, he has been using Bitcoin as an investment since 2016.
Reis was quoted as saying:
“I developed a device that powers the coffee machine with Bitcoin transactions to study and have fun. Dealing with technology, for me, besides work, is a hobby. My intention was not to create something to explore commercially, I wanted to simply explore the technology’s capability and show other people how BTC is ‘programmable money’.”
The machine does not use Bitcoin’s Lighting Network (LN) but Reis revealed that he has plans on creating one using that technology. He also noted that he has a website in which it is possible to pay for mock coffee as well as other products so that he can test the LN.
