The DAO for freeing Julian Assange raised over $38 million as ETH holders pooled their funds to prevent the Wikileaks founder’s extradition in the United States so let’s read further in today’s latest cryptocurrency news.

The newly formed DAO is raising money to free Julian Assange, the Wikileaks founder, from being extradited to the United States. The DAO for freeing Assange dubbed “AssangeDAO” has already raised $38 million in ETH since its launch recently. According to assangedao.org, the goal of the DAO is to inspire a solidarity network and fight for the freedom of Julian Assange. Driven by the community, the funds will go towards financing Assange’s legal fees but also launch campaigns to increase public awareness of the struggle. Also, they will try to raise awareness of free speech implications on his case.

According to the Juicebox site for creating project funding using DAOs, AssangeDAO raised 12,575 ETH, and given the surging market in the past few days, this is worth more than $38 million alone. This officially makes it the biggest Juicebox Ethereum fundraiser in history and surpassed the “ConstitutionDAO” too. The latter was created to purchase an original copy of the US Constitution and raised 11,613 ETH since inception. Those that contribute to the AssangeDAO are awarded the JUSTICE governance token whcih gives power in future directions of the DAO. The plan is to use the money raised to bid on the NFT collection by “pak” the artist in collaboration with Assange titled “Censored” which is set to be auctioned soon.

The United States won an appeal for a British court ruling that prevented Assange’s extradition to America and the DAO started to assemble on Telegram the very same day:

“If extradited to the United States, Assange faces 175 years in prison for publishing truthful information.”

Assange became a figure of international attention after publishing leaked information via Wikileaks from the Army Intelligence Analyst Chelsea Manning. He started hiding under the asylum status in London’s Ecuadorian Embassy but was ejected from it about seven years ago. He has now been held in London’s Belmarsh prison for three years and became the icon for free speech worldwide.
