President Nicolas Maduro promised a major Petro airdrop project, rewarding half a coin for each employee and retiree including the military sector for Christmas if they register to the state’s crypto payments platform as we are reading further in the coming altcoin news.
The president Nicolas Maduro announced back on Friday that these groups of people will be a part of the petro airdrop project for about 0.5 petro as a holiday bonus this week according to the local news source El Universal. In order to be eligible, the citizens will have to sign up for the PetroApp which is the official government crypto wallet that was launched back in May.

The platform that supports the oil-backed cryptocurrency is designed to allow the users to purchase goods and services from their phones and conduct standard transfers.
PetroApp can also be used to exchange other cryptos which means that the users will use the app to swap their airdropped petro for the supported Bitcoin, dash, Litecoin. Maduro explained that the airdrop will be just another opportunity to encourage the people of Venezuela to switch to the petro which has been available since 2018. Considering the national minimum wage is less than $10 a month and the eligible citizens will be incentivized to register for the app. In the meantime, the president said that more than 500,000 petros will be paid out from the state’s own supply to support the local governments across the country.
This only one of the series of efforts of Maduro to push the nationwide adoption for the Petro coin.

Back in September, Maduro ordered future funding for a social housing initiative to be paid out in petros and he even requested the Bank of Venezuela, one of the largest banks in the country, to make the token available to its customers. Despite the limited number of use-cases, the government has been paying state pensions in petro for one year.
Petro did receive a strong government support and has been in circulation for more than a year but it didn’t found much organic growth across the country. There are only 400 businesses that accept petro payments as of last month according to the government press releases.
