Patreon is a membership platform that can also be used as a source of crowdfunding. Now, Patreon suspended the Ukrainian NGO Come Back Alive after ruling that the NFTO was violating the terms. The NGO was established in 2014 when the armed conflict broke out between Ukraine and Russia-backed separatists. The NGO claims to provide armor and medical equipment to the Ukrainian fighters. The director Taras Chmut said that over $300,000 was donated in the hours after Russia attacked Ukraine.

Patreon removed the NGO’s page and wrote a blog reiterating that that platform won’t be used for funding weapons or military activity. The company added that the platform won’t allow funds raised here to be used and to support violence or purchasing military equipment which is why Come Back Alive’s page was suspended pending investigation. After the investigation of Come Back Alive, Patreon found that the donations to the NGO were used to buy about 1400 tablets with military software, to create and to implement new technology solutions and models of weapons but to also train hundreds of snipers, gunners, and drone operators.
Patreon clarified that the contributors will be refunded and recommended that the donors instead send funds to other charities like the Ukraine red cross Society, Voices of Children, and the Revived Soldiers of Ukraine. Patreon stopped the help to Come Back alive but the NGO is still one of the many in the conflict that accepted crypto donations. A report from blockchain analytics company Elliptic revealed that the NFOs raised more than $570,000 in BTC for the military in Ukraine. The founder of Russian punk band Pussy Riot, on the other hand, Nadya Tolokonnikova, announced that she will be launching a UkraineDAO to raise funds for organizations that will help the people in Ukraine.

Russia’s wealthiest however could start using crypto as a means to have the effects of the global sanctions on Russian businesses. The government proposed legislation to recognize BTC mining in energy-abundant regions like commercial activity and bring crypto into the same regulatory framework as foreign currency. Russia is the third biggest BTC mining nation after Kazakhstan and the US but it was largely unaffected by the invasion.
