The Onecoin lawyer accused of laundering money for the OneCoin pyramid scheme has started his trial in New York. He is the first of three key players in the scam to face the trials while the founder of the scam Ruja Ignatova is still on the run as reported in the crypto news previously.
The Onecoin lawyer, Mark Scott, who was a partner at Locke Lord LLP, denied moving hundreds of millions of dollars from the Onecoin scheme into offshore accounts and he was arrested over a year ago for his role in the multi-billion dollar global pyramid scheme. Scott pleaded not guilty previously to the formal charges of Conspiracy to commit money laundering and bank fraud.
The Onecoin lawyer defense is based on his claim that he did move millions of dollars through the scheme but he was unaware that it was in fact, criminal scheme. He even claims to have raised several concerns about the platform although to who wasn’t quite specified. The hearings will likely last up to three weeks.
Others who are facing prosecution are the Onecoin co-founder Sebastian Greenwood who was arrested in Thailand in 2018 and extradited to the United States and Konstantin Ignatov. Ignatov is the brother of the OneCoin founder, Ruja Ignatova and he was also arrested at LAX airport earlier this year. Ruja Ignatova is still on the run but has been charged in her absence with multiple counts of fraud and money laundering.

OneCoin has also been taken to court in a class-action lawsuit which was brought by an investor who lost $103K to the scheme. However, the platform still continues to function in many jurisdictions around the globe. It was recently the subject of a BBC documentary, speculating about the whereabouts of the Crypto Queen.
Ruja could be living in Europe as some of the theories claim and even had extensive facial reconstructive surgery with the help of all the money from the scheme. Greg Begley, another witness in the story, is also expected to submit crucial evidence that will tie Scott to the fund transfers. Overall, Scott stands accused of draining more than $400 million in proceeds from the OneCoin crypto scam.
