The scammers are launching phishing sites and impersonating popular NFT marketplaces like Bored Ape Yacht Club after the ApeCoin token launch especially now since one user lost 3 BAYC NFTs in the scam. Since the lanching, BAYC became one of the biggest names in the NFT space and the multi-million dollar sales are growing the list of celebrity owners which managed to brign in some huge cash opportunities for the scammers.
Our friend @BlackAppleArt had 3 of his Bored Apes stolen today by a fraudster. I I'd like to initiate #BAYCBUYBACK tag with the idea for @BoredApeYC to buy them back and deliver to the real owner. Can we try to get this to @yugalabs and @BoredApeYC? Tweet #BAYCBUYBACK! pic.twitter.com/ogyRfCZQPc

The popular crypto sleuth ZachXBT revealed the user fell for a phishing site impersonating BAYC and lost $900,000 with most of the stolen ETH was sent to Tornado. ZachXBT urged users to stop connecting the wallets and approving transactions on random sites. The victim of the attack was identified as a Twitter user under the name Black Apple. The news came in a few days after a phishing hack drained up to $75,000 worth of assets from the digital wallets and after the hyped launch of the Apecoin, scammers rushed to scam some users to a link that managed to drain off their NFT and ETH.
In a bid to promote the phishing sites, ZackXBT revealed that the attacker bought a hacked version of verified accounts on Twitter and used bots to tag people in the replies. The website impersonated the BAYC claim website and lured some investors into getting a free APE token. The NFT holders who connected the wallets to the claim site were drained out of their NFTs and ETH and the users lost up to $73,500 while the stolen NFT Azuki was put up for sale by the scammers:
“These scammers typically buy verified Twitter accounts on forums for a few thousand dollars and then proceed to profit running fake giveaways & advertising sketchy projects. This time they launched a phishing site. Always triple check the site you are connecting your wallet too so you don’t become the next victim.”
The fraudsters leveraged the frenzy around BAYC’s launch of a new token and the reports show that the anonymous user managed to drain 60,000 APE tokens which amounted to $1 million in an airdrop via a flash loan.
