New updates show that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the regulator CFTC just moved its format for the Annual Fintech Forward Conference to online. On July 9, we can see the decision of the fintech office of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) with more details on how they will replace their annual one-day Fintech Forward conference with three separate online lessons under the series named Empower Innovation 2020.
As noted in the crypto news today, the new conferences will take place on September 24, October 21 and November 19, with the LabCFTC subdiving the days according to the subject matter. Furthermore, the Director and Chief Innovation Officer of CFTC just moved the format online, saying that this was an effort to deal with reduced attention span for virtual rather than physical events.
“To do a full day we knew that we’d probably end up with people getting distracted,” she said.

The annual Fintech Forward conferences have played a major role in the relatively young LabCFTC work for several years. As Netram explained, the office’s reaction to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is as following:
“Because of the pandemic we realized that [the in-person conference] is not going to happen. But we realized we didn’t want to lose sight of the advantage of bringing these people all together.”
The blockchain news now show that it was at Fintech Forward 2019 when the Chairman Heath Tarbert announced that LabCFTC would become an independent office within the commission under Netram.
“Encouraging innovation and enhancing the regulatory experience for market participants is essential to what we do at the CFTC,” said CFTC Chairman Heath P. Tarbert when announcing the Fintech Forward event.
As CFTC just moved the conference to virtual this year, Netram also spoke about the importance of educating other parts of the agency and how they have been doing that over the past period. She said:
“We are able to focus more on these training sessions across the commission and touch on things, like I said, as basic as what is blockchain as well as more complex issues.”
Meanwhile, yesterday the CFTC released its strategy for the remainder of Tarbet’s term as a CFTC chairman, which ends in 2024. They also noted that they closely monitor their markets and regulate their derivatives, under a current practice which favors Bitcoin and Ether commodities.
