The Mozilla co-founder Jamie Zawinski posted on Twitter criticizing the foundation for accepting donations in crypto especially in DOGE as we can see more today in our latest cryptocurrency news.
The Mozilla Foundation announced that the company now accepts Dogecoin donations and the news got a lot of backlashes, especially from the Mozilla co-founder Jamie Zawinski. The non-profit organization behind the Firefox browser announced that it started accepting donations in DOGE using BitPay but the open-source community was not impressed. The backlash was immediate with some even saying they will cancel their donations to the foundation. What they didn’t realize is that crypto donations have been a thing for Mozilla since 2014. however, the co-founder was among the harshest critics:
“Hi, I’m sure that whoever runs this account has no idea who I am, but I founded @mozilla and I’m here to say fuck you and fuck this. Everyone involved in the project should be witheringly ashamed of this decision to partner with planet-incinerating Ponzi grifters.

Zawinski co-founded Mozilla in 1998 and left the project a year later to pursue other ventures. The proejct then release the first version of its browser in 2002 and in 2004 Mozilla released the Firefox browser whch remains one of the most popular open-source internet browsers with more than 211 million active users as of December 2021. Mozilla started accepting BTC and crypto donations in 2014 via Coinbase. Using BitPay, Mozilla can take a variety of crypto donations like Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin, Doge, Litecoin, USD Coin, and SHIB.
Using BitPay, the crypto donations are sent to the payment service and converted into the currency that the recipient wants but this nuance could make a little difference to the crypto’s detractors. The environmental impact of crypto has become a hot-button issue and a common critique that is levied against the industry. It is well documented that the proof of work blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum require a lot of energy and their carbon footprints are massive. We saw Kosovo yesterday ban BTC mining after the committee recommended banning the practice after declaring a 60-day energy state of emergency.
As recently reported, Mozilla is not the only company that accepts donations in crypto. The most famous organization in the world by Julian Assange WikiLeaks received $2.2 million in crypto donations to continue publishing news leaks and classified media by anonymous sources. It was founded back in 2006 by Julian Paul Assange who is an Australian Activity, editor, and publisher. He was arrested in 2019 in London facing charges in the United States of conspiring to hack into a Pentagon computer network in 2010.
