The Taiwanese multinational hardware company Acer is the latest popular organization to fall victim to the popular ReVil ransomware attack and according to the reports, the perpetrators requested one of the biggest demands for $100 million in Monero-XMR. Headquartered in New Taipei City, Acer is among the biggest computer hardware producers with revenue of over $230 billion. Reports from Bleeping Computer indicated that the giant fell victim to the ransomware attack and read that the hackers have announced on their data leak website with successful penetration of the Acer servers by placing images of stolen files as proof.
The attackers said that they had compromised and obtained financial spreadsheets, bank balances, and bank communication as well. As of the time of writing, it’s unclear whether the company paid the requested demand.
In contrast, if the company doesn’t pay by March 28th, the ransom would be double to $100 million. It’s worth noting that Acer refused to comment of the company was a victim of a ransomware attack but the statement that they released read that it had “reported recent abnormal situations” to relevant DPAs and LEAs. The ransomware gang announced the transition from requestion BTC As the main demand payment option to the privacy token but after citing anonymity issues, they started asking if all demands should be transferred with XMR and provided educational materials to teach other victims how to buy and send coins.
They made the same request to Acer as well so the screenshots show that the computer giant has to convert its fiat currency to XMR before transferring the funds. Previously, the ransomware hacks demanding crypto payments targeted a New York-based law firm whose clients were celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, LeBron James, and Argentina’s Telecommunications company Telecom.
As previously reported, The Russian ReVil attackers or hackers, dumped $1 million worth of BTC on a forum as a part of an online recruitment flex.
