IT engineer offers $72 million to find his lost hard drive that contains 7500 BTC in it and he asked for permission to search a landfill site as we can see more in today’s BTC news.
The IT engineer, James Howell accidentally threw away his hard drive that has 7500 BTC in it and appealed to his local council for permission to search a landfill site to retrieve it but the council hasn’t granted him permission to do so. Howells asks for a local council for permission to search the landfill before only to have his request denied. 7500 BTC is a lot of money which is about $286 million by today’s prices. In a renewed effort to convince the council, Howells offered $71 million to help him find the hard drive, as he said:
“It’s quite a lot of money still sat there in the landfill.”
The BTC hard drive found its way into a landfill by accident but Howells threw his hard drive that was full instead of the one that was empty but still believes that he can track his old BTC down. He wrote:
“If I could access the landfill records, I could identify the week that I threw the hard drive away; I could identify the serial number of the bin that it was in. I’d like the opportunity to sit down with the decision-makers and present to them an action plan for what we want to do.”
Howells thought of other ways to take care of the local environment during his search for the old BTC as he said:
“We want to employ an inflatable structure to create an air-tight seal around that area to stop landfill gases escaping.”
There’s no guarantee that the hard drive will be intact because of the environment that it was in but Howells remains optimistic. He added:
“I believe there still will be a chance. But the longer this drags on though, it’s less likely to be a possibility.”
Newport City Council is not as eager as Howells because the money will come from the lost BTC if it is found:
“Even if we were able to agree to his request, there is the question of who would meet the cost if the hard drive was not found or was damaged to such an extent that the data could not be recovered. We have, therefore, been clear that we cannot assist him in this matter.”
